Help

Snowcut finds the best moments of your videos and joins them into one short montage, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it, in five steps

  1. Add your videos. Drop them on the page or press Drop videos here and pick as many as you like. Each is checked in turn; a long one takes a while, and you can start looking at the first while the rest are checked.
  2. Say what you are looking for. In the bar above the montage, Looking for: Anything can be changed to Laughs, Action or Cheering, and Montage length to about 15 seconds up to a minute or two (or your own number). The montage is found again at once if you have not edited it.
  3. Look it over. Press ▶ to play. Click a clip to trim it by dragging its edges, hold and drag a clip to reorder it, press Leave out on a video to drop it, and add any moment from the Moments list. Undo and Redo take back any change.
  4. Choose where it is going. Press Save and pick a size: Discord, WhatsApp, iMessage, text message, X, or Just small. Snowcut aims the file under that limit.
  5. Save it. The MP4 goes to your Downloads, or opens the share sheet on a phone. If the file came out over the limit, the message says so and offers 8mb.video.

Which files and browsers work

Files

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV from phones, cameras and screen recorders. If your browser cannot play a file itself (mostly iPhone HEVC video in Chrome, Edge and Firefox), Snowcut downloads a converter once and makes a smaller, playable copy on your device. The converter is slower, so a long video takes a few minutes the first time.

Browsers

Chrome and Edge are the most tested. Safari decodes iPhone video itself, so it never needs the converter. Firefox works, but on a phone it has no fast video tools, so finding moments works and saving a montage is slow.

Length

The sound model, which tells a shout from plain noise, listens to videos up to 20 minutes long. A longer video is judged by loudness and motion only, and its card says so.

When something goes wrong

"Your phone stopped letting Snowcut read the file"

On a phone, a picked file can stop being readable after the page has been in the background for a while. Remove that video and add it again.

"Low-res proxy" on the screen

Your browser could not play that file, so Snowcut made a small copy on your device to look at while you work. The video you save is cut from your original file, not from the small copy. (A montage of several clips is joined again and capped at 1080p.)

An iPhone video is slow

iPhone videos are usually HEVC, which Chrome, Edge and Firefox cannot play. The first one downloads the converter; after that it is faster. Safari does not need it.

Firefox without fast video tools

Some Firefox versions (Android in particular) have no WebCodecs. Snowcut still finds the moments and plays the video, but timeline pictures are missing and saving is slow.

The file came out over the limit

Snowcut tries again a little smaller, up to twice. Your browser's video encoder has a floor it will not go below, so a busy picture can still end up over a very small limit such as a text message's 1 MB. The message tells you the size and offers Save it anyway. For a file that is still too big, 8mb.video compresses bigger videos.

I picked the wrong thing

Press Undo. It steps back through every change to the montage.
